Ecofriendly water treatment, such as oxygen ozone water control, implies the treatment of water or wastewater without causing harm to the environment. This concept seems simple and should be commonplace in the sector that protects drinking water and ensures wastewater treatment and resource recovery. But, chemical treatment continues to grow as one of the most accepted forms of treatment.

Although most people think of ozone and oxygen as chemicals, they are really just different forms of the element. Although it could be argued that they are naturally occurring chemicals, “chemical treatment” typically refers to using such chemicals as sodium hypochlorite, bromine-based chemicals, and synthetic compounds. However, consumer and regulatory drivers are moving the water sector to include more ecofriendly and natural treatment solutions, including ozone and oxygen. Both ozone and oxygen applications have been developed and adapted to consume less energy, require less manual work, and become more cost-effective than chemical solutions.

Municipal Wastewater Treatment: Chemicals Versus Nature

Odor control in a wastewater treatment system provides a great example of where natural treatment is advancing.

Odor in wastewater collection systems typically comes from sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB). SRB’s metabolic processes lead to the development of hydrogen sulfide as it is excreted as part of their life cycle. Hydrogen sulfide, in turn, wreaks havoc. It causes odors, corrodes concrete and metal, and the gas itself can become life-threatening at high levels.

Chemical control has been the standard solution for this problem. However, there exists a commercially available natural treatment option that can be more effective, less costly, and lower in hazards to operations: oxygen dosing.

This straightforward oxygen ozone water control treatment method uses purified oxygen to treat force mains. The oxygen can be generated and dosed onsite to maintain aerobic conditions. Aerobic wastewater collection systems avoid odor-causing SRBs because SRBs live and respire only in aerobic conditions.
